Years of irresponsible development have resulted in devastating damage to waterbodies, across the United States. Published studies demonstrate the impact of toxins from septic systems and runoff which raise water temperatures over time, eventually resulting in the death of the important microbes and bacteria which balance the ecosystem. Nitrogen, emanating from septic systems, has been identified as a key culprit in the excess nutrients that cause algae blooms. High nutrient levels, particularly nitrogen and phosphorous, are key causes of algae blooms. Blooms can harm marine life, pets and humans. The algae works to suppress oxygen eventually killing off fish, harming marine life and posing health hazards to humans and pets.
Vibrio Bacteria:
Recent reports about Vibrio bacteria in Long Island waters have understandably raised concerns. However, the media is not reporting on a recent discovery of Vibrio, but rather on measurements that likely occurred over recent summers.
Vibrio is a naturally occurring group of bacteria found in coastal and estuarine environments. Vibrio bacteria are most abundant in warm, brackish waters and tend to peak in summer and early fall when temperatures are highest. IT DOES NOT OCCURE IN FRESH WATER such as Little Fresh Pond.
